Men’s 1st Team

The Men’s 1st’s are the elite squad of the guy’s hockey club.
In 2004 they were languishing in Central Division 2, but the remarkable achievement of three successive promotions led the team to the heights of National 2 in 2007, the second highest league in Scotland. During this run the team also secured the National 3 crown. Unfortunately with several key players graduating, a lack of depth led to Glasgow falling back into National 3 in 2008, where they currently reside after a few transitional seasons in the past two years. With the squad always improving hopes are high for promotion this season.
As well as competing in National 3 on a Saturday, the 1st’s compete in Division 1A of the BUCS Scottish Conference. This takes place on Wednesday afternoons against other Uni’s around Scotland.
Last season the 1st’s gained promotion by comfortably winning BUCS Division 2, as well as winning the Scottish Conference Cup with a 6-2 victory over local rivals Glasgow Caledonian University. This was due to an impressive run of a 13 matches without defeat, which consisted of 11 victories and 2 draws. This season Glasgow will be up against Dundee, Aberdeen, Heriot Watt and Edinburgh Universities.
For those looking to take university hockey further there is also Scottish Universities trials every two years and, if selected, participation in the BUCS Home Nations against English, Irish and Welsh Universities. Last year Glasgow had three representatives in the squad as Scots Uni’s finished 3rd but had the satisfaction of defeating the ‘Auld Enemy’ 3-0 in the final match.

The Men's 2nd XI plays its weekend hockey in Central Division 2. Over the last couple of years performances have markedly improved and the team finished in a respectable 4th place last season. With a strong squad next year, there is absolutely no reason why the team can't mount a serious challenge for promotion. Players who perform well individually will get an opportunity to showcase their talents for the 1st team over the course of the season. Highlights from last year included a 4-0 home win over Strathclyde University 1s (always a tasty derby!) and a 3-0 victory over the now promoted Carnegie 2s.
On a Wednesday the 2nd XI plays BUCS hockey and is currently in Division 3A of the Scottish Conference. The 2nd's made their debut in this division only last year and so did well to secure a strong mid-table finish. The challenge for next year will be to improve upon this result and ideally push for promotion

Well what can be said about the heart of the Men’s Club? The 3rd team were reintroduced to Glasgow Uni in 2007 and two strong performances in West District 4, culminated in the 3’s being promoted to West District 3. They continued their storming performances in West District and wasted no time in getting promoted in their first season to West District 2. Along with constant victories the 3’s have a superb team spirit, with their now annual Curry Night a highlight on the Uni calendar. If you’re ever lucky enough to get an invite, you’ll know you’ve made it in life!
