HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!

Hope you had a great Christmas and New Year, and are preparing yourself for 2008! GUSA Ball, Pub Golf, Tour, Meet the Old Gang, Club Dinner … oh yea and lots of HOCKEY!!

TOUR UPDATE: Tour shenanigans this year will be taking place in DUBLIN!!! Make sure you are there, we guarantee you will not regret it 31st March – 4th April!!

The GUHC is renowned as one of the most social and fun clubs on campus, that welcomes anyone. Below are some of our most famous socials, and a little bit about what you can expect . . .

Meet the Gang – this is the first social where the whole club comes together, giving the boys and girls a chance to meet and freshers a chance to mingle with the rest of club. Held in Viper, one of the West End clubs of new sponsor G1, although a lot of the night is taken up trying to understand what the Northern Irish folk are saying,  it is also filled with a few ‘interesting’ games and ends with some truly awful dancing, all washed down with plenty of alcohol. Don’t worry, because despite the hangover the next morning you will be feeling slightly more at ease, having just made, oooh I don’t know, 100 more new mates! Welcome to the GUHC . . .

Christmas Dinner – For some people, this is an initiation to the age-old GUHC tradition of fancy dress. Despite looking and feeling like idiots, we do actually sit down and eat a civilised roast, though don’t be fooled, the formalities don’t last for long! After sampling some of the finest yuletide cuisine Glasgow has to offer, as well as some of the cheapest wine, be sure to follow the surviving Marys, Josephs, Shepherds, Angels and elves into town for a boogie, and whatever lies beyond . . .

GUSA BallOrganised by the Glasgow University Sorts Association (GUSA) for all of its members, this is the pinnacle social event of club sport at Glasgow. This is the only opportunity you will get to scrub up, put on some nice smelly and mingle with all the other GUSA Sports Clubs. The aim of the evening is to award high achievers and celebrate sport at Glasgow, which many can confirm definitely happens in style. This years ball organised by our own esteemed GUSA Vice-President, Euan ‘Shakes’ Miller, and promises to be the best ever. We all look forward to seeing what a great job he does. No pressure mate . . .

The Subby – the greatest event of the GUHC calendar, Birthdays, Weddings and even births have been postponed so this hallowed event can be attended. Making use of the Glasgow Underground, this is a race against the clock and each other to see who can complete the ‘full circle’ first. This is achieved by visiting each and every subway station, and hopping off to sample the finest tipple of the local tavern before racing back to the finish line, the union! Bonus points are given for managing to convince the union bouncer ‘I’ve only had two points, honest!’  Oh and you should probably bear in mind that sitting down, or holding on while on the tube is strictly prohibited. Holding onto the floor however, is permissible if necessary. Good luck with that . . .

Pub Golf – Scenes as the West End is where we spend most of our time, we thought is only right that we invent a social for it. Cue Pub Golf. The concept is very simple. 9 ‘Holes’. As many shots as it takes, and some outfits no respectable golfer would be seen in. Again completed in teams, the ‘holes’ are actually bars, and the ‘shots’ are some of the finest ales the west end has to offer. Unfortunately this includes Glasgow’s resident pint of filth, masquerading as a lager, the dreaded Tennants. The number of shots you take to complete the hole depends on the speed of consumption. Despite numerous requests, Golf buggies are not provided and the method of travel is the more traditional ‘a pied’, despite having once being completed on crutches. That’s commitment. So dust off those long socks, outrageous jumpers and silly hats, and we’ll see you at the first tee!

AGM – This is a serious night. Honest. This is the event where the club selects its new committee for the forthcoming season. Details of this years fabulous committee and their roles can be found at the committee/ contacts page.

Club Dinner – Held annually at the close of the season, this is the chance to celebrate all the successes of the year and reward the contributions of individuals throughout the season. Don’t be fooled by suits and dresses though, because the night is basically an opportunity for team captains to ‘punish’ those who have committed notable misdemeanours through the year, or those who are generally annoying! After an introductory drink of ‘champagne’ (Diesel or ‘Snakebite’ for you southerners) on the terrace (Beer Bar), dinner is served in the Dining Room – this bit is real! Followed by the obligatory sugar lump throwing, the evening moves onto Awards and Punishments. Everyone receives some sort of numeration for their brilliance or stupidity, so don’t feel left out if you haven’t been called up, because your turn is just around the corner! Be sure to be there when the graduates receive their ‘special’ leaving present, Glasgow’s favourite beverage, Buckfast!! The final social of the year, this is your last opportunity to party with the best there is, the GUHC! Finland, Finland, Finland . . .
