Men’s Section – GUMHC

Despite loving our female hockey playing counterparts (commonly known as griffs) we thought it necessary to dedicate a full page to justify how brilliant we are. So if you are one of the girlies, you are in the wrong place!

By joining Glasgow Uni Men’s Hockey Club, you are becoming part of one of the most successful sporting outfits at the Uni. The trend of achievement runs throughout all the teams, and we are recognised as one of the most competitive hockey playing universities in Scotland. TRAINING is Monday 6-8:30pm @ Garscube (bus leaves GUU at 5:15pm) and Thursday 8-10pm @ Kelvin Hall

1^st XI

The 1st XI are currently enjoying an excellent run of form, having been promoted for the third year in a row. Now in National 2, they are competing for the first time in a Saturday league against their archrivals Edinburgh University. They have also seen success in the BUSA Trophy Wednesday competition, beating such English universities as Nottingham and Newcastle, before finally succumbing to Birmingham away in the Semi-Finals. With a healthy winter indoor squad, and current holders of the Glasgow Intervarsity Cup, Glasgow Uni 1st XI has established itself as a dominant force in Scottish University Hockey.

2^nd XI

The 2nd XI can go into next season with their sticks held high, not because a new set of fresher griffs enter the affray, but for the excellent performance last season which enabled them to enter Central Division 2. The 2nds will have their work cut out for them facing a more skillful league (with less grumpy old men) than previously encountered, although this could be nullified merely by the fact that there opposition may abide slightly closer to the laws of the game! Players of the 2nds will also have to keep a close eye on there fellow club members as the club expands creating a 3rd XI... This can only aid to improve the 2nd XI squad with a bit of competition and many thanks must go to the huge intake of Freshers last season which we hope to see again this season. The team has the joy of a 2nd BUSA team to look forward to allowing for many a road trip and the experience of playing other Universities. So, whether a colosal victory to celebrate, a game to forget with the aid of drinking games or a sesh in the beer bar mid week, the 2nd XI will have a smile on their face!!! Hope to see you there.
